St. Patrick's Day Parade
On March 17th in Chicago some rather unusual things happen. The Chicago River takes on an uncharacteristic green tinge, a green stripe appears down the center of Dearborn Street through the Loop, and tens of thousands of people sport green clothing, hats and the odd green beer. A slight brogue can be discerned in the voice of the cop giving directions. You then ask yourself why he's wearing a green sash and carrying a shillelagh.
It's St. Patrick's Day in Chicago. Now it's a matter of fact that the Mayor of Chicago, Himself, is of Irish ancestors. 'Tis the wearin' o' the green this day and jubilation is the order of the day. In fact it was until recently that a festive parade was actually held on the very date on the calendar. Now all city parades are held on Saturdays much to the chagrin of the faithful.
