The "El"

The first elevated trains ran from Congress to 39th and over to Jackson Park for the World's Fair of 1892-93. The railway then extended services to the West Side, then north, then south again hooking up with the business district, the stockyards and manufacturing areas. Steam engines were used on the elevated railway systems until electric railroads were exhibited at the fair. Their clean-running dependability was well demonstrated and created much desirability. The Chicago Elevated Railway became the first electrically operated elevated railway in the country.

As the elevated railway expanded through the heart of Chicago to the outer reaches the city expanded with it. New apartment construction and housing starts progressed along with the businesses where these early commuters worked and shopped. In 1919 the Loop was connected with Evanston and other northern cities (including Milwaukee) when the Northshore Line was allowed to enter the Loop via the elevated railway.

In 1974 the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) was absorbed into the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) covering six counties. The coordination was designed to accord the mass transit company more efficient operation and better service to its customers. Whether, or not, that's actually been the case has been a constant debate ever since its inception.
