New Comiskey Park

I was at the last ballgame played in the original Comiskey Park along with 80,000 other fans of baseball. Comiskey was the oldest ballpark in the Majors (1910-1990) at the time and it was really feeling its age. It was a shame to see it go, but that's progress.

New Comiskey Park, now just known as Comiskey, is designed purely for the playing of baseball. The new facility seats just over 44,000 fans and there are no (read that damn few) bad or obstructed seats in the house. Arguably, the only glitch in the design of the seating is with the upper deck seats. While the seating hardware is comfortable for most people, the angle of inclination is enough to cause even the stalwart fan concern when jumping to cheer or when stepping over people to get to the end of the isle to exit. Railings would have gone a long way to preventing vertigo.

The ground breaking was held on May 7, 1989 and it took 23 months to complete the new ballpark right across the street from the old one. The normal view from the infield seats is pretty good. I sat in the seats that gave me this view you see here in my painting. There are plenty of opportunities to catch foul balls without the steel upright supports of the old ballpark to get in the way. The outfield bleachers are great because they actually have backs on the benches, and they're contoured for your back.

The best way to get to the ballpark from downtown (or from the north side) is to take the El, which stops at 35th Street. For a buck you can't beat it. Driving into the area can take some time depending on the day of the week and time of day. Unlike many other ballparks around the country there is no tailgating done here. Buy your peanuts from a street vendor and head for your seats. An equally direct exit is recommended.
