There are literally eight typewritten single spaced pages of listings of parades and neighborhood festivals. So, with all of these, you're probably wondering why I selected only this parade and this scene for my painting of a typical Chicago celebration. That's easy, my mother's parents were from Italy and my college roommate went to Marist (the band).
One of the unique aspects of Chicago is its ethnic diversity. Knowing this, the folks at City Hall encourage the citizenry to remember their roots while adding their personal significance to the blending of humanity.
The Columbus Day Parade was begun in 1952 by the Knights of Columbus and the Joint Civil Committee of the Italian Americans expressly for a platform to display the constructive attributes of the Italian-American community. They also wished to remind us of the contributions of its members to the City, and of our historical background as a nation. Columbus was responsible for starting the rush of immigration to this New World after his successful voyages in 1492.
At this time Italian cuisine is the meal of choice for the majority of Chicagoans who dine out. In the past ten years, there has been a tremendous surge in the growth of Italian restaurants throughout the City. Let us not forget our enviable appetites for pizza. We're known the world over for Chicago-style deep- dish pizza.
