Chinese New Year
1983 is the year 4681 in the Chinese calendar, and also known as the year of the Pig or Boar. The crackle of firecrackers can be heard on both sides of Wentworth Avenue as thousands of people follow the ceremonial dragon from business to business where a traditional Chinese ceremony is undertaken.
At each stop the dragon must be fed cabbage and oranges to appease it until a massive load of firecrackers is ignited chasing the dragon off to it's next call. The air is a din of clanging bells and pounding drums which is shattered by the tiny, but numerous, explosions.
When the smoke clears the dragon has slithered away to its next house call only to repeat the ceremony time and time again. The color and pageantry are superb with the sounds and visuals aesthetics forming quite an exciting scenario. Chinese flags and architecture punctuate the horizon along Wentworth and Cermak roads. You are invited to pass through the gateway into Chinatown and sample the many flavors of the celebration of this New Year in the Chinese calendar.
