Burnham Harbor and Planetarium
Winter comes at last with its icy fingers and cold breath to chill the city and all that venture out into January's air. Life takes on extra sensitivity when the mercury dips below 32 degrees.
The boaters have all gone. Some have moved south with the birds for the winter while others have chosen prime locations on the icy surface to garner one more game fish from the frigid depths of the harbor.
The Planetarium sleeps while awaiting the busloads of children who must be there to rest from rote participation in math and reading classes. Their inquisitive eyes gaze heavenly as the ceiling in the planetarium comes to life revealing the stars and planets before lunch can be served each day.
It's late morning on this cold day in January. The gray sky over Lake Michigan describes the snow it has left behind. There are no cries of sea birds, no clattering halyards of sailboats or the ponderous thuds of the feet of joggers along the trails. It's winter in Chicago.
