Modeled after its counterpart in Versailles, France, the Buckingham Memorial Fountain was donated by Miss Kate Buckingham in memory of her brother. The construction cost in 1927 was more than $1,000,000 and was to serve as a memorial to Clarence Buckingham who was a trustee and benefactor of the Art Institute of Chicago.
This fountain, with 133 jets of water and illumination, is approximately double the size of the fountain it was modeled after. The center column of water shoots upward to 100 ft.! When the fountain is at full operation it pumps out 300,000 gallons of water an hour. The waterspouts are spread throughout 600-sq. ft. within which three basins rise to a central pool. There are numerous smaller pools surrounding the entire fountain whose main pool is 300 ft. in diameter.
You are looking at the fountain from Lake Michigan to the west. In the background is another wonderful Chicago landmark, the Auditorium and Roosevelt University. This building was designed by Louis Sullivan in 1889 and was famous for its superb acoustics and large stage area.
