Wanna Tell Someone They're Blessed?
It's a bright beautiful Sunday morning in October. The autumn colors are emerging in earnest as the day begins with a crispness to the air. As many people are doing this day, I am on my way to church. It's not one of my normal habits, but today I have a special reason. I want to paint a picture of a Sunday service with a big choir. I found my willing subject at the Fellowship Baptist Church on 45th and Princeton. The south side of Chicago. The pastor is the Reverend Clay Evans and he has been kind enough to extend the invitation for me to be a part of the services for this day. As I explain my purpose amid the last minute rush behind the scenes, I assure him of my ability to be discreet. His reply made me smile. Yes, I would be very noticeable, but I promised to work from the balcony. Today is his and the church's 44th anniversary. The morning service begins with young men of the parish leading the assembling congregation in prayer and song. It's just going on eleven in the morning as the bright sunlight streams through the large stained glass window in the center of the church. As one of the choir comes to the lectern, he reminds us that you have to put something into the service to get something out. Makes sense. Even the Beatles said: "The love you take is equal to the love you make." The choir files into their places in front of the congregation lead by their musical director Lu Della Evans-Reid. She says something very memorable into the microphone that sticks with me and becomes the title for this painting. It is unexpectedly and delightfully profound.
