Oak Street Beach

Ahhh! The Beach! Nothing quite like soaking up some rays on the beach on a warm summer day. It helps to rid our bodies of that pale and pasty look we acquire during our long winter tenure. Oak Street Beach has been around for as long as the lake has been, but it took the Chicago Park District to give the beach its name and make it an official part of the city and its heritage.

Bounded by Lake Shore Drive the entire area is several acres of sand and swimsuit clad sun worshipers. During the odd inclement weather break an occasional bit of flotsam make appearances on the shoreline that draw the attention of children and artists (both interchangeable).

The facade of buildings that line the boundaries of the beach include many high-rise apartments, the Drake Hotel, the old Playboy building and the now retired Mayfair Regent. As Lake Shore Drive winds its way south along the lakefront it makes a gentle S-curve around the Drake and apartment buildings and continues towards Grant Park. In the distance you can see the waterworks and Navy Pier.
