CHICAGO Introduction by the Artist, Brad Bennett Chicago has been known by many nicknames and anecdotes including "the White City, Hog Butcher to the World", "Transportation Hub of the United States, City of Big Shoulders, and of course "The Windy City". During the 1934 World's Fair it was touted as "Chicago the Beautiful" and "Magic City of the West". Chicago has been host to the Colombian Exposition in 1893 and the Century of Progress in 1933-34. Chicago is the home of mail-order retail business. Several businessmen established their earlier enterprises within this city only to see them flourish into giants of economic success. Some names you might recall are Sears Roebuck & Co., Montgomery Ward, and Spiegel. Industry also flourished here with the accessibility to water and vast transportation networks encompassing rail, air, water and roadways. We know the world's busiest airport as O'Hare, named for famed World War II flying ace Butch O'Hare. For decades the world's tallest structure was located in the Loop in the Sears Tower. Chicago has major league sports teams in every venue. The Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks, Bears and Wolves continue to reign either as champions of their respective domains or provide the high level of competition and entertainment expected of them. Our architecture bespeaks a strong heritage founded in diversity and innovation. Dozens of individual neighborhoods still cling to Old World traditions. Chicago's parks and beaches serve as focal points for recreation along a beautiful waterfront landscape that rivals the Mediterranean Rivers. This work is dedicated to the indomitable "I Will" spirit of the mid-westerners from the Windy City.
